Julie:

The Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division will be hosting its
3rd annual Philip Lee Phillips Society symposium at the Library on
Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19. This year's Phillips' symposium is
entitled "Visualizing The Nation's Capital: Two Centuries of Mapping
Washington, DC."

The conference will draw on Library of Congress specialists, nationally
recognized archaeologists and cartographic historians, architects and
city planners, land surveyors, and modern cartographers who will, in
their respective sessions, discuss elements of the mapping of Washington
DC from Pierre L'Enfants'18th century manuscript "Plan of the City of
Washington..."; to Andrew Ellicott's 1792 published "Plan of the City of
Washington..."; maps of the area we now know as the District of Columbia
drawn by George Washington ; changing cartographic representations of
waterways (The Anacostia and Potomac Rivers, and Rock Creek) in
Washington, DC; the evolution of street names in Washington, DC; and
both historic and modern maps (including free smart phone apps made
available by the National Park Service) of the National Mall.

On Saturday, May 19 from 1:30 - 3:30, the Geography and Map Division,
the world's largest map collection, will host an open house open to all
that will feature many of the maps discussed in the symposium proceedings.

The full program and registration instructions for the free symposium
will be made available on the Library's web site shortly. Additionally,
the Library intends on posting a webcast of the conference following the
proceedings.

In the meantime, I will be happy to answer any questions anyone may have
about the conference via phone or e-mail (see below).

Hi, all,

This is rather cryptic. Anyone know more about it?
