TITLE: Librarian (Geographic Information Systems) #102664
CATEGORY: Non-tenured Faculty, Full-Time (12-Month Appointment)

An opportunity for a public service-oriented individual to work within
the team environment of the University of Maryland (UM) Libraries in
College Park, the largest university library system in the region and in

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The GIS Librarian designs, implements, coordinates and teaches workshops
using ESRI’s ArcGIS; this includes developing instructional materials
and collecting statistics. Provides in-depth reference for GIS as well
as general reference services. Maintains GIS workstations by
troubleshooting software and coordinating technical support. Recommends
software purchases and upgrades. Promotes GIS services by collaborating
with campus partners to expand GIS services. Teaches classes for the
Libraries’ general instruction program, as well as classes requested by
course faculty. Responsible for collection development, management, and
access to geospatial resources from the Federal Depository Library
Program (FDLP), state/local governments, and commercial vendors.
Maintains familiarity with and assists patrons in using map resources
held in the U.S. Government Information department’s collection.
Provides staff training as appropriate. Supervises map related FDLP
responsibilities. Participates in activities of the department and in

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Master’s of Library or
Information Science program. Minimum 2 years of demonstrated proficiency
using ArcGIS. Evidence of leadership ability. Excellent oral and written
communication skills. Demonstrated computer literacy skills including
proficiency with MS Office. Demonstrated commitment to public service.

PREFERRED:
Subject background and experience in Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) or related disciplines, demonstrated through an academic
degree(s), course work, publications, or substantive experience.
Teaching experience in presenting course-related and general GIS
instruction. Understanding of current and emerging trends in GIS, maps
and cartographic information resources, and familiarity with geospatial
resources and software, information technologies. Experience providing
reference and instructional services. Collection development experience
in maps and other cartographic materials in an academic or special
library setting. Experience in Federal Depository Library Program.
Proficiency in HTML and other web authoring tools. Excellent
interpersonal skills with the ability to function independently and in a
team.

Position is appointed to Librarian Faculty Ranks as established by the
University System of Maryland Board of Regents. Rank at appointment is
based on the successful applicant’s experience and relevant credentials.
