Also, isn't part of the "legal" Manhattan on the Bronx side of the Harlem River
anyway? If I remember right
from living up there, the Inwood area is part of Manhattan but it's firmly
attached to the Bronx shore.
On the other hand, this may have been due to human intervention --older maps
show the river curving up
a bit further north. Anyone know?

If I remember correctly (and if not, someone will tell me), when the
course of the Harlem River was changed by human intervention (in order
to "straighten out" a nasty curve and thus cut down sailing time) it was
a piece of the Bronx which suddenly found itself on the south side of
the river and part of Manhattan, rather than the other way as described
by Frank. And Inwood is the name of the neighborhood at the northern tip
of Manhattan Island (or Peninsula, if you want to be legal about it).
Thanks to David Allen for that interesting information--any news on when
New York is going to realize that Liberty Island belongs to New Jersey?!
