Having been a government document librarian for all of four days (today is
the fifth), I have an observation to pass on. I was checking in the 7th ed. of
DIRECTORY OF GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT COLLECTIONS & LIBRARIANS and discovered that
under the index headings for "DMA maps," "NOAA maps," and "USGS maps," the Free
Library of Philadelphia is not listed. I assume the directory was compiled
from questionnaires sent to Sup. of Docs. depository collections. The only
problem is here at FLoP, the Map Collection in the Social Science & History
Dept. is the depository collection for these things and not the Government
Publications Dept. This may have happened in other institutions as well. It
behooves ALAMAGERT, SLAG&MDiv, & WAML to make sure future editions will include
this information. I assume there are folk out there who are members of both
MAGERT and GODORT; I just sent in my membership application this morning.
