Maps of Kazakhstan

Maps of Kazakhstan are available from the cartographic company GEO

address:

Satpaeva 30 "B",
Almaty
Kazakhstan

The shop is on the ground floor of an apartment building on the south
side of the street.
Enter via the side door on the east side of the building, and the shop
door is 4 doors or so along on the right.

The company offers physical, political/administrative, economic, land
use and land ownership maps, fuel and energy infrastructure maps,
transport maps etc of Kazakhstan,
Regional maps(oblasts)
Maps of Kazakh cities (soviet topo maps and modern street maps)
Geological maps, maps of neighbouring countries,
etc.

Maps can be supplied on paper or digitally.

The lady in the shop does not speak English.

They have topographic maps a scales of 1:1M, 500k and 200k. These cover
Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries. Maps are Soviet era, but they
also have much of Kazakhstan covered with post-1990 (and often
post-2000) Kazakhstan Republic-produced sheets using Soviet sheetlines
and styles. Thus you can get modern 500k sheets covering the Aral Sea
showing its shrunken extent c.2000-5.
Topo quads are 700tenge for 200k scale and 800tenge for 1M and 500k
scale sheets.
(exchange rate is 120tenge per US$, and 100tenge per Australian $)

Better value is a series of 1:1M oblast sheets with topographic detail
in Soviet style, and sub-oblast adminisrative boundaries shown. Each
oblast (14 in total) is covered on a single sheet, each sheet being a
different size. All are 1:1M scale, and sell for 350-560tenge each. A
complete set is about 5500tenge.

Street maps sold include soviet-era topographic city plans, as well as
modern street maps in Russian or English of Almaty and Astana. These
include indexs, and some historical information on the rear.

"Pribaltika Strany SNG Kazakhstan / Zheleznye Dorogi 2006" is a very
useful railway map of the country: a map of Kazakhstan on one side
showing all lines and stations, including planned and under constrution
lines, distances between major cities by rail, major roads, rivers, and
the lines are coloured by railway division. The map also shows where
Kazakhstan operates lines outside the country, and Russia, etc operate
some lines on Kazakh territory.
The reverse side has a map of the CIS showing major lines nd cities,
again with distances, and colour coded by railway division. The map is
about 800tenge from GEO, and also available at Almaty's central railway
station and some bookshops.

A useful map of the environs of Almaty is the 1:200,000 scale
Soviet-topo styled map
"Okrectnoct Goroda Almaty" which covers most of standard Soviet 200k
sheets K43-5, 6, 11, 12 and K44-1, 2, 7 & 8. This is overprinted with
park boundaries, and aryon and Almaty city's boundaries.
Aain, it is about 800tenge from Geo, or from good Almaty bookshops.

"Atlas of Kazakhstan' Geography" is a hardcover atlas, the size of a
hardcove Tintin or Asterix book.
It is available in separate English, Kazakh and Russian editions. Mine
was 4000 tenge at a stall in Astana railway station. It was 7000tenge at
the Astana National Museum!
authors: A.S. Beisenova, K.D. Kaimuldinova, A.L. Okatova and A.P. Pritvorov.
Published by Globe Publishing house, Almaty, 2003.
ISBN 9965-9274-5-6
64 pages. Hardback.
This is a thematic atlas, with a couple of historical maps and the rest
being physical/economic and human geography maps, each a two-page
spread, with text, photos, graphs etc.

*********************
Street stalls and bookshops also sell new nd econdhand historical and
geographic atlas textbooks
for 200-500 tenge each.
There is a series of physical/economic geography atlases for classes 5
through 10 (all about 24pp), and a run of historical atlases (10-18pp
each) by era: ancient, middle ages, 19th century, 20th-21st centuries.
all are about 24pp, paperback, in colour, sometimes with an additional
insert of outline maps for class use.
The atlases appear to be available in either Kazakh or Russian editions.
My geographic atlases were published by "Pride Print baspakhana" of
Almaty, in 2007.
One, in Russian, is by TOO 8&8 email [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>
The historic ones give an email contact at [log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
Of the history atlases the ancient and mediaeval history ones cover the
world, while the 19th, and 20-21s centuries ones cover only Kazakhstan,
and are thus of most interest to foreign libraris and collectors. The
latter begins with the 1916 Kazakh revolt against Russian WW1 labour
conscription and includes maps of envionrmental contamination and Soviet
labour camps.

I also found a Russian school atlas:
"Atlas novaya istoriya s 1870 goda do 1918 goda" covering world history,
originally published 1989 and reprinted 2002, still using the Soviet map
titles such as "Imperialist division of the world 1914-1918"
This atlas is ISBN 5-85120-080-4, Moscow 2002
