The plotters in my library aren't in the Map Library (an internal branch) they are one floor down in the Copy Center. They have been a nice revenue stream for the library. (We don't look to turn a profit, just offset some cost of staffing & supplies). Our income from photocopying has plummeted, and students' e-token laser print charges go to the university rather than to the library. The library is a great central location, neutral, with good hours of service. It frees the other campus units from having to guard and maintain their own plotters.

We purchased a HP Designjet 4500ps, received a second as a hand-me-down from the Student Union that wanted to transition to an unstaffed computer lab, and received a hand-me-down older HP Designjet 5500ps from another campus unit. All three have 36" paper, with 42" paper available upon request. One is loaded with fancy glossy paper. Our staff person down there says they've only ever had one problem with the plotters over several years' use. They have been quite reliable.

Last year we sold quite a lot of the NCAA brackets in poster-size for $4.20. This year, not many so far.

Information on costs & etc. is here http://www.lib.msu.edu/howto/plottingfaq.jsp

My library is in the process of considering purchasing a map plotter. I
was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. Are the printer
plotter/scanner combination good to have? Cost of paper and
maintenance, etc.

Any information that you could recommend would be most appreciated.
