Sorry for cross-posting....but if you have an interest in this thread
(future of the map lirbary?).......i've provided some sources below
(and my list of citations below be added to greatly! in fact....any
citations people have related to map and GIS libraries can be sent along
to me.....:-)

if you have no interest in this thread then (a) delete or (b) why not?
:-) :-)

see Cathy Moudlers Web site at McMaster which has (under the
GIS section) an online bibliography of articles related to GIS in
Lirbaries

http://www.mcmaster.ca/library/maps/gis_libr.htm

and....check out the LIBER web site for papers from the European view...
Ligue des Bibliothques Europennes de Recherche
Groupe des Cartothcaires de LIBER http://www.kb.nl/infolev/liber/#art

and another online source :
http://cartome.org/distributed-geolibraries2.htm

these and others may provide a more detailed review of the
current situation (and the history) in map libraries and archives
with regards to "being digital" and "being analog" (and i've not cited
myself because the other authors say it better)....and of course, some of
the cited sources are from edited texts and journals that are special
issues/edited volumes that present a great deal more than represented in
the sources cited below (for exmaple, McGlamery's articles are very
useful, as are the works in "The Map Library in the New Millenium")....

Finally, i find this thread one that should continue...and perhaps we
should recall the M.Gorman maps-l posting from the GSDI meetings last year
which asked "where are the all librarians" "they should beinvolved in
GSDI" .........

there is a relationship between that posting and the current Keller
article to which i will attempt a more thoughtful "reply" shortly :-)

(and thanks Peter for the article....useful point for providing some
focus on an issue the map lirbary and archives community has been talking
about for some time, and which the geographers, cartographers and GI
scientists should become even more involved in :-)
