I am pleased to report that Henrik Dupont, Royal Library, Copenhagen,
Denmark, has been elected to a two year term as chair of the Geography
and Map Libraries Section, International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2009 – 2011. He may serve another
two year term, 2011 – 2013, under IFLA rules. Anita K. Oser, Western
Carolina University (retired), has completed her two 2 year terms as
chair, 2005 – 2009. Dawn Youngblood, Southern Methodist University, has
been elected secretary/treasurer, 2009 – 2011. Libby Tilley, Cambridge
University, has completed her term as secretary of the Geography and Map
Libraries Section, 2007 – 2009. David C. McQuillan, University of South
Carolina, has completed his term as treasurer, 2007 – 2009. *Véronique
Thomé, *Bibliothèque Nationale de France, continues as information
coordinator/newsletter editor, 2007 – 2011.

Thank you to all who responded to my message about membership in the
Geography and Map Libraries Section. We welcome anyone’s membership at
any time. To serve on the standing committee, nominations will be due
for the next term by February 2011. There are 20 slots on the standing
committee for association and institutional members of the G&M Section.
ALA and SLA have 2 slots each, one for each 2 year term of office. Only
eleven of the slots are filled for the current term and some will rotate
off in 2011, at the completion of their 8 year maximum service (as Anita
and I have this time). It is therefore very important that current and
future members consider nominations to the standing committee and begin
serving at the San Juan meeting in 2011.

We had a busy time in Milan, Italy this past week. After the round of
officer meetings on Friday and Saturday, the Opening Session was on
Sunday. It featured speakers from the host country,
national—regional—provincial—city, as well as important people from the
library world. The Lombardi regional government offered a buffet
luncheon that featured specialties such as risotto, ravioli, salads,
fresh fruit, bread, desserts, and gelato. The exhibits opened with many
European vendors, in addition to the main sponsors – OCLC, ProQuest,
Elsevier, EBSCO, among others. The highlight of the day was an 8:00 p.m.
opera and concert at La Scala, just for IFLA attendees. On Monday there
were planning meetings, papers by the Cataloging Section, and an evening
reception sponsored by the U.S. Mission and SLA in Milan. Tuesday, the
Geography and Map Libraries Section had their open paper session with
the Science and Technology Section and the Division of Special
Libraries. Eight papers were given and speakers and standing committee
members taken to lunch at a local restaurant after the session. The
second G&M Standing Committee meeting was held, after lunch, at which
the above mentioned elections were held. The evening featured a fixed
menu meal in restaurants near the Duomo (Cathedral) and in the Galleria
Vittorio Emanuela II, and several performance and special exhibits
sponsored by the city of Milan. Wednesday we joined an all-day field
trip with the Genealogy and Local History Section. We visited archive
collections, saw restored maps and digital programs, had a full lunch,
and viewed Michelangelo’s “The Last Supper.” We ended the day with our
annual SLA dinner at a local restaurant. Thursday there were paper
sessions by the Genealogy and Local History Section and the last meeting
of Division IV, Bibliographic Control. The IFLA Closing Session thanked
everyone, gave out awards, announced future meetings and showered us
with Finish candy, in honor of Helsinki’s selections for 2012. We closed
our time in Milan with the Genealogy and Local History dinner that evening.

The next IFLA World Library and Information Congress will be held in
Gothenburg, Sweden, August 10 -15, 2010. The 2011 meeting is in San
Juan, Puerto Rico, August 13 – 18, and the 2012 meeting will be held in
Helsinki, Finland in August. Go to www.ifla.org <http://www.ifla.org>
