Creating Interactive Map Indexes – A MAGIRT/WAML Webinar

Presenter: Christopher J.J. Thiry, Map Librarian, Colorado School of Mines

Date: Wednesday May 7, 2014
Time: Noon (EDT); 11am (CDT); 10am (MDT); 9am (PDT)
Location: Web. Registration and URL to be announced.

Stop consulting photo-copied, hand-colored indexes to discover map holdings. Create an interactive website that shows the maps you own! This webinar will teach you how to create your own indexes, populate them with holdings information, and mount the indexes on a web site to create a dynamic, interactive portal to your collection. Best of all, you can deposit your index templates in a crowd-sourced collection for all to share!

Using ArcGIS and arcgis.com, you will learn how to create a basic index to a paper map set (at least those that follow a regular gridded pattern). Instructions will include how to add and manipulate a “fishnet”, how to populate your index with appropriate information such as sheet number and name, how to share your base map with other people, how to populate your index with your library’s holdings information, and lastly, how to upload your index with your library’s information to make an interactive (you can move around the map), dynamic (searchable) web site with embedded links (to your catalog or scanned copies of the maps).

This webinar will focus on indexes to international map collections.

Participants are recommended to have a basic familiarity with GIS.

Christopher J.J. Thiry has been the Map Librarian at the Colorado School of Mines Arthur Lakes Library since 1995. Previously, he worked in the Map Division of the New York Public Library. He holds a BA in history and an MILS from the University of Michigan. He has taught numerous workshops including some in the United Arab Emirates regarding map librarianship, map resources, and map cataloging. He completed a summer internship at the Library of Congress’ Geography and Map Division. He is a former President of the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML), and has hosted a WAML meeting on 2 occasions. He is the editor of the 3 rd edition of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Guide to US Map Resources . He has always had a great interest in creating better indexes and thus better access to map collections.

This webinar is jointly sponsored by the Map and Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT) of the American Library Association and the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML). For more information about these organizations, see http://www.ala.org/magirt/ and http://www.waml.org/
