Subject: acquiring Russian maps
Sender: Christopher Winters <[log in to unmask]>

Those of you who collect current Russian maps may want to know that it's
now possible to order them directly from Russia. (Apologies to any of you
to whom this is old news; but, since I found all this out from a local
graduate student in physics, I have a sense this isn't widely known.)

Globus of St. Petersburg (http://www.globusov.net) is willing to fill
foreign orders at something like the Russian price (ca. $3/sheet) plus the
cost of shipping from Helsinki (ca. $1/sheet). The person to contact is
Vladimir Waldin ([log in to unmask]) who can deal with the world in
English.

Caveat: We've been able to get most (although not all) of what we've
ordered, but note that I don't guarantee this service. Vladimir tells me
he'd welcome orders from other foreign libraries, but I'm not sure his
firm is used to large orders from many institutions at once. This e-mail
is _not_ an advertisement.

The North American and European firms that have been supplying Russian
maps for the last few years at a much higher cost per sheet have been
performing an extraordinarily valuable service, and I'm not trying to
undercut or critique their work. It's inevitable, however, that, as
Russia becomes linked more closely with the Western world, its marketing
patterns will more closely resemble those of Western countries.

Hope this is useful information.
