There is a web site created and maintained by a former colleague of mine, Steve Weiss, who is a former maps librarian at Utah State University, that has interactive mapping web site links listed on it.  The link is http://internetquickreference.net/ .  I hope this helps.

Might I pose the broader question- is there a web based guide to sites
hosting digital mapping of all sorts?

wouldn't it be useful? maintain collaboratively by the mapster community?

    mapper.acme.com <http://mapper.acme.com> uses the Terraserver tiles
    of 1:250K, 1:100K, and
    1:24K.  They're reprojected to a pseudo Mercator, and quite useful to
    me for that very reason.

    But does anyone know where the 1:500K USGS state maps can be found
    online?
