Hello, I think you should include topographical maps of the entire country
at the scale of 1: 250,000. These can be acquired either from the Geological
Survey in Pretoria, or the map vendor GeoCenter in Germany.

Dear Chris,

You really should try to get a copy of the Readers' Digest Atlas of
Southern Africa published in 1985 (and incidentally printed by
Bartholomew, though we had nothing to do with the content). This
is the same size as 'The Times' Atlas, but covering just Namibia,
RSA, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. It has a good text/
thematic section at the start covering climate, history, politics,
socio-economic development, etc (now a bit out of date of course),
followed by a mass of detailed RSA Trigonometric Survey maps at
1:50000 for the main cities (Jo'burg, Pretoria, Windhoek, Cape Town,
Durban, etc), and then a mixture of 1:100 000, 1:250 000 and 1:500 000
for the rest. All the maps are simply reprints of the official map
sheets. It is possible that Readers' Digest have done a revised
edition since then, but I don't know. You could contact the
Readers' Digest (South Africa) Ltd, Strand Street, Cape Town,
South Africa for more detail.

An alternative source for official sheet maps would be the
Dept of Trigonometrical Surveys, Rondebosch, Cape Town, 7700,
South Africa. The main series is at 1:50000 with national cover
of both RSA and Namibia. They also do a more practical map
series at both 1:250000 and 1:500000 in various style (aero-
nautical, cadastral, magisterial/administrative, etc) as well
as orthophotos and geological maps (limited areas). These are
not very expensive (about R6 or 7 each, thus about 1.30 pounds or
US$ 2).

Hope this helps,
