*** Apologies for cross posting ***

We are pleased to announce this new TRAINING COURSE for all those with
maps in their care.

*Map Cataloguing for the Terrified:
how to catalogue cartographic materials for libraries and archives
*
The Map Curators’ Group of the British Cartographic Society is holding a
training course on map cataloguing. The course is for all librarians,
archivists, curators – in fact anyone who has maps in their care and who
wants to keep track of what they have.

*Dates:
*Wednesday 31 January – Thursday 1 February 2007

*Venue:
*Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9DR
http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/

*Description:
*The course will start after lunch on Wednesday 31 January and finish
the following afternoon.

Anyone who describes maps – for catalogues or cartobibiographies; in
libraries, museums or archives; part or full-time – will find this
course of interest.

/Cartographic materials: a manual of interpretation for AACR2/ and
/Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules/, (2nd edition revised) will be the
basis of instruction.

The course will cover all of the basics and will be invaluable to anyone
starting out in cataloguing. The more knowledgeable will also benefit
since there will be ample opportunity to raise specific problems through
questions and during the practical exercises.

In addition to handouts prepared by the speakers each delegate will also
receive:

    * a natural scale indicator.
    * a copy of the Map Curators’ Group Special Issue of /The
Cartographic Journal/ (42.3, 2005) which is devoted entirely to
map collections and how to look after them and which includes
articles on cataloguing printed cartographic materials and digital
      geospatial data.
    * their own copy – to keep – of: /Maps and related cartographic
materials : cataloging, classification, and bibliographic control/
/ Paige G. Andrew, Mary Lynette Larsgaard, editors. Binghamton,
      N.Y. : Haworth Information Press, [1999]. /Retail price $54 (ca.
      £28)!/

*Registration:
*You do not need to be a member of the British Cartographic Society to
attend. The closing date for booking is 17 January 2007. Book Now!
Places are limited.

The charge for the whole course is:
£85 for members of British Cartographic Society
£95 for all others

The full *programme *and the* registration form* are available on the
British Cartographic Society website at:
http://www.cartography.org.uk/Pages/Latest/Curators.html where you will
also find a *poster* for display and distribution. Contact Anne Taylor
(details below) for paper copies or if you need more information.

We hope that running the course over two days will assist those who need
to travel some distance and will give attendees an opportunity to
network informally on the Wednesday evening.

Cambridge is a lovely city to visit and is accessible from most parts of
the country by train, plane and road. There is lots of useful
information about the city at http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/visitors/
and on the ‘Visit Cambridge’ website at http://www.visitcambridge.org/

Come along to share your experiences and talk through issues with some
friendly faces.

Please display a poster
http://www.cartography.org.uk/Pages/Latest/CuratorPoster.pdf if you have
room.

Thanks

Yours

Anne
