TITLE: Maps and Government Information Librarian
 
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Maps and Government Information Department (MGI), seeks
a librarian to deliver a wide range of services in an active,
student-centered environment. The individual hired will work as
a part of a team consisting of 2 librarians, 5 staff and student
assistants. MGI is a US federal (66 % selection level) and NY state
depository with additional UN, Council of Europe, and OECD holdings.
Collections total over 700,000 volumes in paper, microfiche and
digital formats. The map room contains over 170, 000 sheet maps and
a large collection of atlases and aerial photographs. The department
is developing its computerized data and cartographic mapping
capabilities (including Excel, Access, and Arcview 3.0).
This position reports to the MGI department head.
 
RANK: Assistant or Senior Assistant Librarian
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.   Provides maps and documents reference and circulation assistance
at a busy service desk, with some scheduled evening, weekend and
holiday duty
2.   Supervises reference desk activities, including contributing to
development of policies and procedures, and staff training in
reference sources
3.   Teaches instructional classes and promotes library research
instruction to faculty
4.   Performs collection development in assigned areas of documents
and/or maps (all formats)
5.   Maintains departmental home pages
6.   Trains staff and users in electronic applications
7.   Supervises staff and student assistants
8.   Assists the department head in projects
9.   Serves on departmental and library committees and task groups as
appropriate
10. Assumes responsibility for one or more of the following:
circulation, cataloging and processing (Marcive, OCLC),
payroll,  computer software installation and troubleshooting, or
library instruction
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited institution.   One or more
years' experience in providing reference and user instruction to
documents and/or maps in highly computerized environment.
Supervisory experience.   Demonstrated expertise with computer
applications including Windows, relational databases, spreadsheets,
HTML  coding, and the Internet.   Effective interpersonal and
communication skills.  Effective time management and organizational
skills.   Ability to work independently and as a team member.
 
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Degree in social sciences (preferably graduate).  Experience in an
academic or research library. Marcive tapeload experience.
Documents/maps cataloging and processing , and collection development
experience.  Evidence of professional activity.  Demonstrated
leadership ability.
 
SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience, minimum $30,000.
