   Technically we are just this month setting up our GIS workstation.
   But I'll pass along the info you requested.

Geology Library Map Collection, Princeton University
ArcView2
100mz Pentium w/CD-ROM, 21" monitor, b&w laser printer.
   We are still investigating color printers.
Our plan is to use and network 1990 Census data, and provide access to
   various government and commercial map datasets.
We do not have trained staff supporting the GIS.

  * Your institution's name
  * GIS software used
  * hardware supporting the GIS
  * how the GIS is being used in the library

Map and Geographic Information Center
MapInfo 3.01(4 seats), MapInfo for DOS (5), Arcview1 and AV2 (10), Idrisi(1)
Pentium w/ 3.15 Gb server (Novell)
2 public PCs (486, 8+ Mb RAM, networked w/ IP)
36x48 Calcomp digitizer

The LAN is a 10 user license, so users on the campus backbone can access
software, tutorials and data.

I'm not keen on supporting GIS use in library, though I do. I have developed
"how to Login" handouts, a six session MAGIC Seminar Series and a lot of one-
on-one help. I'm pushing remote use though.
One of the sessions, the general reference one, has AutoRoute USA and Europe,
MapExpert and Conn. census by housing and pop for counties by tract and
block group.

Subject: GIS in libraries

As an informal poll, we were wondering how many academic libraries are using
a GIS. No detailed information is needed. We would like to know:

  * Your institution's name
BRANNER EARTH SCIENCES LIBRARY AND MAP COLLECTIONS, STANFORD UNIV LIBRARIES

  * GIS software used
SMI ATLAS/GIS; SMI ATLAS FOR WINDOWS; ESRI ARCVIEW 2.0

  * hardware supporting the GIS
COMPAQ 486DX, HITACHI CDROM PLAYER, IBM LEXMARK JETPRINTER 4029

  * how the GIS is being used in the library
NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT AVAIL. FROM STAFF; STUDENTS MAY START AND FINISH
THEIR PROJECTS ON THEIR OWN SHARING TIME BY THEIR OWN PLANS (INTRO
CLASS OFFERED BY SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES, ONLINE TUTORIALS)

  * Your institution's name: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
    Reference Dept.--Documents

  * GIS software used: MapInfo, Will load Arcview II late this summer

  * hardware supporting the GIS:486DX, 66Mhz, 16 Mb Ram, 830Mb Hard
    drive, HP Desk Jet 550C

  * do you have trained staff supporting the GIS?: Partially. This is
    now being run partime by a Library Graduate Student who is very
    knowledgable. Hope to have a full time professional electronic
    documents librarian mid to late summer.

  * how the GIS is being used in the library?: Primarily MapInfo used
    with Tiger files to create population maps--especially of Census
    Tracts and Blocks.

We are using Mapinfo and are putting Arrview in in JUne, phase 3, GIS lit.
project. We have census data in Mapinfo- will go on to other sci. data as
we can. GIS being used to view data- in porcess of making an array of
products available, from relatively simple, to map it yourself. Hardare as
per GIS lit. project recommendations- 486DX@ 66mhx, etc. We chose a black
and white printer but are lanned to a good GIS and cartog. lab with high
end equipment so will be in pretty good shape we think. Carol Marley,
