Subject: MAGERT Res.Lib. Collection Management Discussion Group
Sender: Karl Longstreth <[log in to unmask]>

For those attending the ALA MAGERT Research Libraries Collection
Management Discussion Group, Sunday 2-4:

At the last ALA, David Cobb let a discussion of the draft report from the
Council on Library and Information Resources, "The Evidence in Hand:
Report of the Task Force on the Artifact in Library Collections", which
was published in its final form in November 2001. It is available at the
CLIR website: www.clir.org and there is a pdf file of the entire
document www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub103/pub103.pdf as well as a
summary.

I would be interested in further discussion of the artifactual value of
cartographic materials, and how that relates to collection management in
the research library, if those in attendance are interested as well.
While I expect that I will repeat below questions from the last meeting,
perhaps discussants can summaries, or raise new issues. Questions might
include:

Is this a topic of discussion in your library or institution?
Do all cartographic materials have artifactual value?
Are spatial digital files also artifacts? Can they be retained?
How are artifacts managed in map collections?
Does this affect your short and long term collection management plans,
considering especially access, preservation, retention, etc.?

Other Discussion Topics:

Collection development activities at your institution.

Collection management issues at your institution.

Collection development and management planning, both short and long term.

Integrated approaches to collection development with other institutional
collections (e.g. does your map collection reflect the strengths of other
campus libraries.)

Other issues that arise during the meeting.

Thanks very much,
                    Karl
