The information below is taken from page 43 of the latest issue of the
RGS Bulletin (‘Summer 2012’).
Note that the new online search facility comes in to effect some time in
May 2012.

New online search facility

The Royal Geographical Society’s online catalogue provides a quick and
easy way to identify individual maps in the Collections, but until now
it has not been so easy to determine online the extent and coverage of
multi-sheet map series. Instead, users have had to visit the Society and
consult the large volumes of printed and manuscript index maps held in
the Foyle Reading Room. The Society is delighted to announce that from
May 2012 this will change and all of the index maps will be available to
view online.

www.rgs.org/cataloguesearch

Catalogue users will find that records relating to series mapping have
an additional entry at the end of the record. The ‘View index map’
hyperlink will open an additional window in which users may zoom and
scroll through an image of the relevant index map. These images vary
greatly depending on the age and size of the series, but in most cases
they will give a clear indication of the extent of the series and many
of them are marked to show which sheets of a series are held. For more
information and an online user guide please visit:

www.rgs.org/collections

In addition, the Society’s print and scanning service enables all users
to purchase facsimile copies of out of copyright maps and charts in the
Collections for research purposes, for personal study and as gifts. For
more information please contact:

(thanks to Greg Eccleston for pointing this out to me).
