GIS Project Assistantship for National Park Service
(1/3 time, starting on or about October 1, 2006)

The National Park Service (NPS) Midwest Region GIS Technical Support Center and the Department of Forest Ecology & Management at UW-Madison seek a qualified candidate to support geospatial needs of NPS units and programs in the Midwest region. The 33% project assistantship (PA) would start on or about October 1, 2006 and continue until September 30, 2007. The third-time rate beginning Fall 2006 is $10,715 per annum and includes remission of all tuition. There is the possibility -- dependent on continued funding -- of support for additional years based on candidate's performance.

Primary Duties:

*       automate, convert, and process geospatial data in support of NPS GIS activities;

*       document (metadata)  data and distribute to NPS GIS clearinghouse;

*       provide support for resource management and scientific applications of GIS to NPS units in the Midwest Region and to UW faculty conducting Park Service research;

*       provide technical assistance on GIS software to NPS units and programs in the Midwest Region, including Desktop ArcGIS, MrSid, Pathfinder Office, and ERDAS Imagine;

* other duties as specified by the NPS Midwest Region GIS Coordinator or principal investigator

Secondary Tasks:

*       provide technical assistance with GIS-related hardware including digitizers, plotters, backup devices and related items to NPS units and programs in the Midwest Region;

*       assist with management of periodic GIS workshops and training programs;

*       as time permits, explore potential of developing a web-based delivery mechanism for distribution of geospatial inventory and tabular data to parks/partners;

Qualifications:

*       graduate student in good standing;
*       completion of relevant coursework in GIS, GPS, remote sensing or related fields, or equivalent experience;
*       experience with ESRI's ArcGIS desktop software, Access 2003, GPS field data collection and post-processing software;
*       interest and/or experience in resource management and planning GIS applications;
* availability to work on project for full calendar year; availability beyond September 2007 a plus.
