I am glad you asked this.

This is something that we have been discussing at our library for the past few months.

Our budget will not support purchasing maps for even fraction of our state (Montana), and the frequency of publication of the new maps means that they would quickly be outdated.

The idea I have had is a two prong approach:
* Print off or purchase maps for the most commonly used areas.
* Provide print on demand service for other areas in the state.

The print on demand idea is one we are are still working on. The print costs are very low (well under a dollar per map), but there is significant labor and expertise involved in printing them. The need to trim each map also makes this idea unattractive when talking about large numbers of maps.

Currently, we do not circulate maps and refer patrons to one of several local stores who stock these maps(outdoor recreation is a huge industry here so demand is high). I have doubts that any of these stores are aware of the upcoming changes. My concern is that these stores will stop selling them, making it difficult for the public to get the maps very easily. We have discussed offering to print these off (limiting it to one or two maps) for the public to keep at no charge, but this idea is problematic particularly if it becomes a popular service.

Thoughts?

All,

After last week's announcement from USGS regarding topos, now what? Should we buy a big plotter and print off topos, etc. for people whenever they want them? Or provide computers with oversized monitors and that's it? What are people planning to do?

Thanks,
