If you check out this website, this London Map Festival is a pretty big
deal, sponsored by some pretty big names. Very interesting ...

London Mapping Festival

Note the reference to the history of cartography below. I feel I should
have known about this already, but I have no idea what historical
elements are being planned.

The announcement below comes from Londonist:
http://londonist.com/2011/04/coming-soon-london-mapping-festival.php

"‘Festival’ sounds like an inadequate word for an initiative lasting a
year and a half. The London Mapping Festival, though, runs from June
this year through to the end of 2012, and celebrates all things
cartographic in the capital.

The full programme has yet to be announced, but will involve events
aimed at professional map-makers, amateur enthusiasts and the public at
large. Like the Story of London Festival, the initiative pulls together
events that are happening anyway and adds plenty of new ones. Themes
will include the history of mapping, modern cartography, geocaching, map
fairs, and digital mapping.

The 18-month cavalcade was sparked by the British Cartographic Society,
but several organisations are members of the steering committee. The
festival also draws on a number of supporting organisations, of which
Londonist is one."
