Senior Scientist Needed!
 
Raytheon STX Corporation, contractor to the USGS/EROS Data Center
has an opening for a Senior Scientist.
 
Responsibilities include: Use of Landsat Thematic Mapper scenes in the
Multi-Resolution Land Characterization archive to create regional land
characterization databases, meet with study site personnel, conduct field
work to examine environmental gradients, and perform accuracy assessments
of the results.  Will be assigned to the Regional Land Cover Characterization
Project under the Land Cover program to develop land characterization databases
using Landsat Thematic Mapper scenes in the MRLC archive.  Other duties
include:
-Organize materials (satellite imagery, digital ancillary data, published
and unpublished land cover materials) required for the definition of land
cover characteristics.
-Apply mulitspectral classification and post-classification refinement
techniques to Landsat Thematic Mapper data for the purpose of defining
land cover characteristics.  This will be done based on EPA regions.
-Interpret a broad set of statistical, spectral, and map data in order
to identify land cover types associated with TM-based spectral regions.
-Work with statisticians and earth scientists in the accuracy assessment
and validation of land cover characteristics information.
-Work with other researchers engaged in environmental studies in the proper
use of TM land cover characteristics databases.
-Verbal and written communication of research and data production results,
including formal publications and presentations  at professional conferences.
-Respond to customer requests for data and information related to land cover
characteristics datasets.
-Work with other scientists to promote the use of regional land cover
characteristics datasets.
-Development of new techniques and products related to land cover
characteristics.
 
Experience: Minimum of 6 yrs. experience in remote sensing or related technical
experience required.  Experience in the identification of a wide variety of
vegetation types and an understanding of natural processes of vegetation
growth is desirable.
Education: MS in a technical discipline with major emphasis in multispectral
image classification, spatial analysis techniques, vegetation/land cover
mapping, and GIS required.  PhD desired.
Special Skills:  Experience using ERDAS/Image software systems to derive land
cover characteristics data sets desired.
