The 72nd IFLA General Conference and Council will host the World Library and Information Congress in Seoul, Korea, August 20 - 24, 2006. The Geography and Map Libraries Section, Special Libraries Division, has chosen for a theme "Which Name is it? The Geographic Naming of Places." The Section would like to invite proposals for papers using this theme, as well as papers describing Asian map collections, especially Southeast Asia and Korea, and regional geographic issues.

There are many examples of various geographic names, such as Persian Gulf v.s. Arabian Gulf, Sea of Japan v.s. East Sea, Falklands Islands v.s. Malvinas Islands, Strom Thurmond Lake v.s. Clarks Hill Lake, etc. If this issue is one that you would like to address, please send a one page abstract to: Anita Oser, Chair, IFLA Geography and Map Libraries Section at [log in to unmask] by March 1, 2006. The paper should be given in 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion. It may be in any of the 5 official IFLA languages, English, French, German, Spanish, or Russian, but there must be an English translation printed for distribution at the Seoul meeting for all non-English papers. Any special audio-visual requirements, such as power point, should be supplied with the full text paper by May 15, 2006.

Please note that all expenses, including travel and conference fees, have to be the responsibility of the paper presenters. For more information and registration forms, go to www.ifla.org and click on the icon for the Seoul meeting. Future World Library and Information Congresses will be in Durban, South Africa, August 19 - 23, 2008 and Quebec, Canada, August 10 - 15, 2008.
