This message, about a `public service' rather than `commercial'
publication which it is hoped with be of great service in map libraries
and the like, is being posted to Lis-maps, history-gis, Maphist and

interested lists, then please do so! Also, apologies in advance for

ORDNANCE SURVEY SMALL-SCALE MAP INDEXES: 1801-1998

For the first time ever, indexes for all Ordnance Survey small-scale
maps have been brought together in a single volume. Most are hard
to find elsewhere; many have been specially drawn for this work,
whilst others have never been published before.

Each diagram has an explanatory text, describing which map series
use the sheet lines shown. The text and diagrams identify which
sheets were or were not published, guiding the reader through the
complexities of incomplete series and changes of sheet lines or
specification. Publication dates, combined sheets, unpublished
sheets, significant specification features and related tourist and
district maps are given for most series. Military, aviation and
geological series are all treated in equal depth.

This book will be invaluable to librarians, archivists, map
enthusiasts, military and aviation historians - in fact anyone who
uses Ordnance Survey maps.

The research and text have been undertaken by Roger Hellyer, who
is a leading author and authority on OS maps. He has spent over
four years gathering the information for this work. All the UK copyright
libraries, together with private collections and numerous local,
university and specialist libraries have been searched. Visits to
Belfast, Dublin, New York and Washington DC have
been made to trace elusive details.

An exensive index, comprehensive bibliography and other
appendices complete this ground breaking work.
