On Sunday, May 23, 2010, OCLC implemented the changes related to the
OCLC-MARC Bibliographic, Authority, and Holdings Formats Update 2010.
This includes MARC 21 Update No. 10 (October 2009) and most of MARC
Update No. 11 (February 2010), MARC Code List changes since July 2009,
and user and OCLC staff suggestions. Many of the changes are related to
the scheduled testing and possible future implementation of /Resource
Description and Access/ (RDA), the proposed successor to AACR2. OCLC
Technical Bulletin 258, which presents the details, is available at
http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/worldcat/tb/258/default.htm.

Among the points of interest:

    * *Bibliographic Records:*

• Two new codes (o = Online, q = Direct electronic) defined for each of
the following Fixed Fields:

• Continuing Resources 008/22, 006/05 (Form of original item -- “Orig”)
and 008/23, 006/06 (Form of item -- “Form”).

• Books 008/23, 006/06 (Form of item -- “Form”).

• Music (Scores and Sound Recordings) 008/23, 006/06 (Form of item --
“Form”).

• Mixed Materials 008/23, 006/06 (Form of item -- “Form”).

• Maps 008/29, 006/12 (Form of item -- “Form”).

• Visual Materials 008/29, 006/12 (Form of item -- “Form”).

• Additional codes in various 006, 007, and 008 elements to allow coding
of previously unaccounted-for media types and carrier types.

• 040 subfield $e is now Repeatable, plus the new code ‘rda’ has been
validated to identify the rules used.

• New subfields for 033, 518.

• New 33X fields for content type, media type and carrier type:

• Field 336: Content Type.

• Field 337: Media Type.

• Field 338: Carrier Type.

• New 38X fields for attributes of musical works:

• Field 380: Form of Work.

• Field 381: Other Distinguishing Characteristics of Work or Expression.

• Field 382: Medium of Performance.

• Field 383: Numeric Designation of Musical Work.

• Field 384: Key.

    * *Authority Records:*

• 040 subfield $e is now Repeatable, plus the new code ‘rda’ has been
validated to identify the rules used.

• New subfields for 046.

• New fields for entity attributes:

• Field 336: Content Type.

• Field 370: Associated Place.

• Field 371: Address.

• Field 372: Field of Activity.

• Field 373: Affiliation.

• Field 374: Occupation.

• Field 375: Gender.

• Field 376: Family Information.

• Field 377: Associated Language.

• *Holdings Records:*

• Additional codes in various 007 elements to allow coding of previously
unaccounted-for media types and carrier types.

• New code (l = Legal deposit) defined for the 008/07, Method of
Acquisition Fixed Field.

• New 33X fields for media type and carrier type:

• Field 337: Media Type.

• Field 338: Carrier Type.

Because of time restraints, OCLC has put off implementing subfield $3 in
Bibliographic and Authority fields 034 and subfields $5 in Bibliographic
fields 800, 810, 811, and 830. These will be included in the next
OCLC-MARC Update.

Additionally, OCLC must postpone implementation of the newly-defined
fixed field element, Computer Files 008/23, 006/06 (Form of Item --
“Form”). Because this is a new position in both the CF Fixed Field,
requiring a change to the CF workform, and in the CF 006, necessitating
a change to the dropdown box for the CF 006 guided entry, it must await
a future version of the Connexion client, tentatively scheduled for late
2010 or early 2011.

Appropriate data conversions and re-indexing of WorldCat will begin
following the May installation. All new searching and indexing
capabilities; new fields, new subfields, new indicators; and new codes
can now be used in both Connexion browser and Connexion client.

Please see TB 258 for additional details.

*Connexion browser:*

· Connexion browser users have changes to the dropdown lists for fixed
field elements available for use immediately.

· All new indexes and new or changed language qualifiers appear in
search screen dropdown lists.

*Connexion client: *

· Beginning at approximately 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight Savings Time on
Tuesday, May 25, 2010, Connexion client users will be prompted when they
start the Connexion client software to download new files that will
include changes to the dropdown lists for fixed field elements. The
window with the prompt is labeled "New Components Available." *You may
need Administrative Privileges on your workstation* to download the
files to your “C:\ProgramFiles\OCLC\Connexion\Program” directory (or its
equivalent), so it would be a good idea to check about that first.

· When you get the prompt, click "Yes" to download the files immediately
or "Remind me later" if you do not wish to download right away. The
client does not send any confirmation of the download, however, you will
be prompted to download the files each time you open Connexion client
until you complete the download.

· If you do not receive the prompt, shut down the Connexion client
completely, rather than just logging off. When you open the client
again, the prompt should appear.

· If you do not receive the prompt to download, continue to receive the
prompt repeatedly, or have other problems downloading the new files,
please contact OCLC Product Support and Training at 1-800-848-5800,
[log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>, or
http://www.oclc.org/us/en/supportandtraining/. Product Support staff
will provide you with assistance, including the files to be downloaded
and instructions on manual downloads.

· In Connexion client, new indexes and new or changed language
qualifiers will not appear in search screen dropdown lists, but may be
input manually via the command line. The search screen dropdown lists of
indexes and language qualifiers will be updated in a future version of
the Connexion client, tentatively scheduled for the 2010 or early 2011.
