Jim,

A somewhat related situation occurred here with our Earth & Mineral Science
Library's map collection in that it formerly was tucked away around the
corner as part of the open book stacks until a couple of years ago, and
then moved front and center right next to the reference desk area for the
library, but not for anything remotely to do with copying/staffing issues.
This was done primarily as a use issue and the fact that over the past 3+
years this collection of over 25,000 titles went from being uncataloged for
the most part to completely cataloged. The combination of the collection
being cataloged and accessible in our OPAC and physically moving it out
into the open has really promoted heavy use of a collection that formerly
received very sporadic use. If you would like more specific information
and/or thoughts on our E&MS Library map collection contact the Head of the
EMS Library, Linda Musser, at [log in to unmask] but wait until next
Thursday at the earliest as she is flying to Reno to attend the American
Geological Association's annual conference tomorrow.

Joanne Perry, the Head of our Maps Collection can also share stories about
how map collections that are in "open stacks" situations work or don't work
well, as well as moving from a 2nd floor location with a huge row of
windows looking out over the beautiful American Elm-lined mall in front of
our Pattee Library to the basement of the new Paterno Library with no
windows...

Paige

p.s. I have little sympathy about the window situation, Technical Services
and/or Cataloging departments AND most map collections reside in windowless
basements of libraries and its really not that bad!!!!
