Dear Anne

Just to warn you that Indian mapping of its coastal and border areas has
been considered confidential for many years and generally not permitted to
be taken out of the country. Thus, it's difficult to find or purchase,
though if anyone has any I'm sure you'll hear from them.

You may have to consider mapping produced by non-Indian agencies, such as
the British government (but this mapping will be old) or the Russian (or
ex-Soviet) military (but this mapping will be expensive). Offhand, I don't
know if there was anything done by the US military (again, it won't be
current) at this detailed a scale.

Hope this helps.

On behalf of a faculty researcher I am seeking coastal topographic mapping
of India at 1:50,000. We have an incomplete 1:50,000 set published by the
Survey of India India but have none of the coastal sheets.

I'm wondering if these sheets are available somewhere else and if so, what
options there might be for loan or copying.

Area of interest is the southeast coast between 14 and 10 degrees latitude
at 80 degrees longitude (roughly Madras/Chennai south to
Karaikal/Pondicherry). The numbering scheme on the index map indicates:

66 A-D (sheet numbers 1-8)
58 M-O (sheet numbers 9-16)

Thank you very much.
