Chris,

We just experienced a class project where college students (don't know
what class it was) were required to find a gazetteer and use it to
answer questions.  Many of them did not know what a gazetteer was or
even how to pronounce the word.

So, my advice would be to tell the elementary kids about gazetteers.
Maybe some of them will remember.
