Greetings,

In addition to the other great resources noted earlier, here are my five
or six favorite items forteachers related to topographic maps.

_Map Adventures _
<http://erg.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/teachers-packets/mapadventures/> (Grades K-3)
This on-line teacher packet for grades K-3 teaches basic concepts for
visualizing objects from different perspectives and how to understand
and use maps. The kit includes seven lesson plans, activity sheets, and
a printable poster.

What Do Maps Show?
<http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/teachers-packets/mapshow/> (Grades 5-8)
This on-line teacher packet for upper elementary and junior high school
students has four lessons on reading and using maps. The packet includes
a teacher's guide, four printable activity sheets, and three maps in PDF
format that can be downloaded and printed on 8.5" x 11" paper.

Exploring Maps
<http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/teachers-packets/exploringmaps/> (Grades
7-12)
/Exploring Maps/ is an interdisciplinary set of materials on mapping for
grades 7-12. Students will learn basic mapmaking and map-reading skills
and will see how maps can answer fundamental geographic questions. The
map images and activities in this packet can be used in various courses,
including geography, history, math, art, English, and the sciences.

_27 Ideas for Teaching with Topographic Maps_
<http://education.usgs.gov/lessons/teachingtopomaps.html>
Contains 27 ideas for teaching with the approximately 57,000 topographic
maps that the USGS offers.

(Number 18 is related to PLSS)

Set of Topographic Maps Illustrating Physical Features
<http://nationalatlas.gov/fs/100toposFS.pdf>
An attractive two-sided introduction to this expanding set of Dynamic
Maps. The Set of Topographic Maps Illustrating Physical Features offers
a new way to gain a better understanding of America's physical geography
using current and historic topographic maps.

_Topographic Maps Illustrating Physiographic Features_
<http://www.nationalatlas.gov/100topos/index.html>
More than 50 years ago, the USGS selected a set of 100 topographic maps
showing good examples of a wide range of physical features in the United
States. The goal was to help students learn about the geologic evolution
of the Nation's natural landscapes and to show how topographic maps
reveal more about the land surface than its shape and elevation. These
specially printed map sets have been unavailable for many years. The
National Atlas is now launching an improved and revised digital "Set of
100 Maps" using a simple _online viewer_

An overall summary of useful USGS resources for working with topographic
maps: where to get them; how to interpret them; how to use them;
explanations of coordinates, datums, and projections; and lessons for
the classroom. Also available as a 2-page _PDF file_

Hello,

The USGS has a page on working with topographic maps at
http://education.usgs.gov/__lessons/mapresources.html
<http://education.usgs.gov/lessons/mapresources.html> which includes
several educational resources (at the bottom of the page). "What do maps
show?" is linked to this page and is designed for middle school. This
was also available as a free educational packet many years ago, and
included a poster and several lesson plans. It may be available in a
depository library.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey has a publication titled "Reading
topographic maps—activities for earth science teachers and students"
which can be downloaded for free from:
http://www.ogs.ou.edu/__pubsscanned/EP7.pdf
<http://www.ogs.ou.edu/pubsscanned/EP7.pdf>

The Illinois State Geological Survey has a publication titled "How to
read Illinois topographic maps" that is also available for free download
at: http://library.isgs.uiuc.edu/__Pubs/pdfs/ges/ges20.pdf
<http://library.isgs.uiuc.edu/Pubs/pdfs/ges/ges20.pdf>

Finally, the Maine Geological Survey has a resource titled "Reading Maps
with a Critical Eye: Becoming an Informed Map Reader" on their maps web
site (http://www.maine.gov/doc/__nrimc/mgs/mapuse/index.htm
<http://www.maine.gov/doc/nrimc/mgs/mapuse/index.htm>), which is
particularly geared towards geologic maps.

Hope this helps. Linda Zellmer

Subject: map reading books for 6th-9th graders?

Hi all;

I have a local (NC) middle school teacher looking for books that can
be used to teach 6th-9th graders how to read maps. I'm no familiar
with books for that age group. Could someone recommend 2 or 3 titles?

Thanks
Russell Guy
