Baron Frederick von Egloffstein, born in Bavaria in 1824, and who
served in the Prussian army, immigrated to the U.S. sometime before
1850, and ended up in New York, between 1864-73. He was one of many
European scientists and technicians who accompanied exploratory and
scientific expeditions west of the Mississippi.

I am interested in him as a New York City mapmaker, as he had a studio
here for about ten years, and was a prolific publisher of prints,
     views, maps, trade cards, etc.

In 1857 he published a book which I have been trying to track down
with no success. The copy at the BL was destroyed in WWII. sigh.

The title and imprint is as follows:

New style of topographical drawing, derived from late experients with
the photograph and daguerrotype, from Mountain models. Washington, no
     publisher given, 1857.

The book is not in NUC pre-56; not in standard lists of nineteenth
century books, periodicals or documents. And, a recent book search
online failed. I suspect it is a government document, and might just
     have been a pamphlet.

Any ideas? I would like to obtain it for the Map Division, but if I
can just get a digital or microcopy that would also suffice.

Anybody seen this? Could be filed under Von, Van, Egloffstein or,
     incorrectly, Eggloffstein.

     Many thanks, Alice Hudson
