CURATOR, AMERICAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY COLLECTION
 
 
 
The Golda Meir Library, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applications
 and nominations for the position
of Curator of its American Geographical Society Collection (AGSC).  AGSC has
 world-renowned holdings of
rare maps, atlases, globes, monographs, and iconographic materials in geography
 and related disciplines.
 
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a major metropolitan university
 serving more than 24,000 students
and offering 45 Master's programs and 17 Ph.D. programs (including Geography.)
  The campus is located in
Milwaukee's beautiful lakeside residential area.
 
POSITION DUTIES:  Responsible for the senior management and administration of
 all AGSC operations.  This
includes formulation of goals and policies; budget preparation; supervision of
 5 professionals and 2.5 support
staff; collection management; preservation and conservation; teaching and
 lecturing; outreach programs (including
fellowships, exhibits, publications and user services); and liaison with UWM
 Schools and Colleges, and the
American Geographical Society in New York City.  The AGSC Curator reports to
 the Library Director and also
works closely with the Associate Director.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate's qualifications will include the
 following:  Required:  MLS from
an ALA-accredited program; master's degree or equivalent in geography or other
 relevant field; knowledge of
cartography; minimum of 3 years progressively responsible managerial experience
 in a special or academic
library; ability to provide strong professional leadership, to support
 scholarship,  and to work collegially with
faculty, staff, and scholars; experience with rare materials librarianship
 including conservation/preservation
techniques; commitment to the principles and goals of affirmative action and
 equal opportunity; strong written
and oral communication skills.  Preferred:  Professional leadership at the
 national level in geography and map
collections; knowledge of 2 or more major European languages; accomplishments
 in research or scholarship;
demonstrated ability to generate external support.
