Subject: Re: MAPS-L: Question about cataloging geologic maps

Nearly all large-scale (1:250,000 and larger) geology maps are compiled on
topographic base maps. In most cases the geology maps are published
showing the topographic base map, thus they have elevation contours
underneath the geology overprinting. In some cases the color of the
geology overprint is dark/heavy enough to obscure the contour lines but if
you look closely they are there.

Geophysical maps (Bouguer gravity anomaly, magnetic anomaly, etc.) nearly
always have isolines showing lines of equal value of whatever the topic of
the map. Structural maps and aquifer maps sometimes have isolines as well.

In these cases these isolines should be noted separately from elevation
contours.

Cheers
