Subject: Re: 'Un-conventional' sign on USGS 7.5 topos (fwd)

Brian,

The symbol you are probably referring to on the USGS 7.5-minute topo maps is a geographic grid tick. These ticks are spaced every 2.5-minutes of both Latitude and Longitude, so there are 4 on the interior of every 7.5-minute map. You can draw a line through the interior ticks and end up at the geographic coordinate and tick printed in the map margin. These ticks are extremely handy to help people find the latitude and longitude of map features using commercially available pocket templates.

The USGS is currently in the process of revising the symbol brochure sheet and we have already incorporated these ticks in that revision. The sheet should be completed sometime later this fall.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely,
Tom Schulz

Subject: 'Un-conventional' sign on USGS 7.5 topos

I have a question regarding a sign that appears on many USGS 7.5 minute
topos, which apparently is not listed on the symbols sheet (that I could
see). It is a cross or plus sign, thusly: + except that it is larger and
printed lightly. They look like printer's registration
indicators.Any information regarding this issue would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Brian
