As a follow-up to my question about Canadian and Mexican data, several sites
were overwhelmingly recommended:

http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/ Geogratis in Canada; only small-scale data
available
http://atlas.gc.ca/ National Atlas of Canada
http://www.statcan.ca/english/services/ Statistics Canada

ftp://ftpserver.ciesin.org/pub/data/Mexico/ CIESIN's Mexican data holdings
and viewer
http://www.geografxworld.com/prod03.htm commercial vendor
http://www.inegi.gob.mx/ similar to USGS

For all of these sites, the data available is very small scale, which didn't
give us what we were looking for. Also, several people mentioned the
ArcCanada CD, which is only available to Canadian schools and libraries. I
have yet to find even a commercial source that will sell me detailed
Canadian data for use in an academic setting.

Thanks for all the responses.
