Now that we have a nice maps plotter, we have been trying it out to see
how it works.
As you know, the USGS no longer will distribute topographic maps. Now,
we have to download it from their Maps Locator website and print it out
for ourselves in order to include it into our collection.
The new USTOPO maps are published in the new geo.pdf format which allows
you to manipulate the map in such a way that you can remove the
orthoimage and just view the plain drawings. You can also remove
everything and just have the image without place names, contours, etc. I
also discovered that when I used the size stated on the .pdf that when
it printed out, only the orhtoimage with all the information except for
the white borders and coordinates came out. Again, can be useful if you
want to put together several quadrangles in order to show the area better
Let's say, i want to add these varying topo maps for our area. One with
all the information, the second one without the orthoimage (plain
drawing), and the last one without all the data just the orthoimage. How
would you go about cataloging such maps. GPO has already provided the
call number for them. GPO has also sent out the bib. records as an
electronic resource only...not making print versions of the bib. record
available.
How are you handling the new USTOPO maps in your collection?
Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.
