Dear Mappers and Map Librarians,

I am a first semester graduate student in Library
Science at Syracuse University, earning my degree with
the sole intent of becoming a map librarian. As a
final project for one of my courses, I am required to
develop a pathfinder on the library subject of my
choice, which is map librarianship. The point of this
assignment is to identify new trends or issues in map
librarianship, and provide excellent web based sources
as descriptors or exemplars of the 21st century map
library.

After searching the web for sites and articles
relating to map librarianship, I am completely
overwhelmed with the amount and diversity of
information I've found. I'm writing to you all in
hopes of recieving some professional input to narrow
my broad topic to one or two of the most important
(and of course, interesting!) issues confronting map
librarians. I am not necessarily looking for
references to websites. Rather, I am hoping to narrow
and deepen my understanding of the importance of
issues in map librarianship, including but not limited
to:
What are the effects of Federal Depository Materials
being offered online?
What role should map librarians play in teaching GIS
to patrons?
Should map librarians use MARC or Dublin Core or ...
to catalog?
How have interactive maps available online affected
patron use and services?
and etc, etc...

As a note, I worked for a few years in the University
of Colorado Map Library, so feel free to use "map
lingo" without having to explain it.

Thank you for all your help in advance,
Wendy Mokes
