Francis,

I wholly concur with Mr Adrian White's conclusion that Denmark is the
happiest of all nations. Having rambled about that country some
recently, I can agree that an atmosphere of good cheer predominates the
general scene. Where to begin?
Humor can be martini-dry. Example: the proprietor of a camping ground
in Klitmoller, Jutland asks, 'So, where are you off to next, Iraq?'
Close calls can be tense: In Randers, despite a large truck having
backed up and accidentally smashed the rear end of a parked car, the
drivers of both vehicles are showing conspicuous signs of good
naturedness in sorting out the situation. Merry laughter is actually
heard.
Nothing but goodness can be found in Odense. And Aalborg is pretty
jolly, too (and not just because of the akvavit...).
Only significant display of emotion bordering on anger that was seen: a
man setting up his stall at a flea market in the town square of Roskilde
almost gets annoyed when the driver of a dubious car blocks the passage
to his delivery van. Car soon moves on and man resumes usual
gentleness.
In the same town, at the same time, preparations are being made for a
parade of members of the Danish Santa Claus club (with guest Santas from
as far away as Spain), soon to wend its way through the ancient and
cheery streets. The hostel was full of them the night before. 'Ho, ho,
ho!' occurred frequently.
In Copenhagen, they have bicycles that can be borrowed for free within
the city's core. Tivoli also contributes to Danish happiness.
Simple, really.

Pity the rest of us, mired in the unhappiness of our 23rd or 41st or
125th positions!

Brian
