Regarding JPEG2000 image server for maps:

Although there has been a JP2 extension for CONTENTdm for quite
a while now, at the University of Nevada, Reno we waited until
we had a new server in place on which to load version 4 of CONTENTdm.
We already provide access to our scanned historic maps via three
file formats (DjVu, jpegs, and tiffs) and now we will be re-loading
all 473 of our scanned historic maps via the JP2 extension so that
there will be a 4th file viewing option. From here on out, we will
be loading all the scans that are in the queue via the JP2 extention.
Our sysadmin is trying to determine why we are having trouble loading
compound objects on the new server, but the plan is to load double-sided
maps (such as historic highway maps) as compound JPEG2000 objects.

When viewing our maps as JP2's, I recommend clicking on the icon that
looks like two boxes hooked together. That view allows you to move
your viewed area with your mouse.

On the new server, the "test area" for the 6 maps that have been loaded
as JPEG2000's so far is at:

http://contentdm.library.unr.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/hmaps2

whereas ALL of the maps currently loaded the original way are at:

http://contentdm.library.unr.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/hmaps

We are not the first institution to load maps via the JP2 extension
on CONTENTdm but I would be happy to try to answer any technical
questions you might have that Linda relays to me from MAPS-L.

Hope this helps,

Glee
