9 month base appointment with additional 3 months dependent upon

JOB SUMMARY:
The library is located in the Geophysical Institute/International Arctic
Research Center in
Fairbanks, Alaska. It is the most northern special library in the United
States that focuses on
polar physical sciences. This international collection includes
approximately 24,000 journal
volumes and 76,000 books and reports, of which over 600 are specialized
historical books.
Special collections include; International Northern Sea Route,
International Historical
Glaciological Volumes, International Geophysical Year (IGY), Chemistry
of the Earth’s Interior
(IAVCEI) and Alaska Department of Transportation Library. The library
routinely provides
support for approximately 600 local research scientist, staff and
students. Scientists, both
national and international, are frequent visitors to this unique collection.

This full time term faculty position provides specialized user-centered
reference and collection
management services to support the research programs in space physics,
remote sensing,
volcanology, atmospheric sciences, seismology, glaciology, snow, ice and
permafrost at this
international research facility. Reporting to the Geophysical Institute
Director, the librarian is
responsible for all aspects of the library, including budget. Candidate
should have at least 3 years
experience in a special library setting working in reference with
scientific research materials and
collection development. Participating in national and international
library organizations is
important in this position for scholarly publishing opportunities and
library information
networking.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: PhD or Masters Degree and at least 3 years
experience at
time of appointment in library science from an institution accredited
with the American Library
Association is required.
