The grid is already in the USGS topo booklet index for each state. The
BLM surface and surface/mineral maps are all 1:100,000 scale so just use
the index in each booklet for the 100K topos. All the BLM surface and
surface/mineral management maps will be either A-1 or E-1. If both the
coordinates at the SE corner of the map are whole degrees the letter
will be A. If the southern coordinate at the SE corner is on the half
degree, i.e. something with a 30 seconds after it, the letter will be E.
But GPO is pretty good about getting the cataloging for these in OCLC
promptly so you shouldn't need to figure all this out for yourself.

These are fun aren't they?

I can't answer deeper at present, but the A, C, E, etc. letters in the
SuDoc no. pertain to a grid that is laid out. If you see an index to
these,
you will see that the grid starts with a larger set of "blocks" with the
letters repeating within each block.

As long as you have an established SuDoc no. for your map, you don't
need
to worry. If you don't have, and can't find the full number and need to
determine it, then you will need to look at the map, along with the grid
(which is the best way) to derive the correct letter to use (as well as
the
following number, e.g, A 1, C 3).

If I have a chance, I will add more details and explanation. I did
dozens
of maps from various series and set up the grids to make this easier to
determine each time.
