Chris,

We (Library of Congress) do not use sheet-feed scanners (aka
paper shredders). We use a large flatbed Tangent and are in
the process of installing a Jumbo Scan.
The Jumbo Scan is produced by Lumiere Technology (in France)
and the U.S. distributor we are going through is Data Management
Internationale (DMI).

We can answer questions about this new scanner in about a
month or two.

I would also like wish you luck on printing. We have had trouble
with colors and printing. Basically we encourage people to go
to the graphic/printing experts - within our agency we suggest
they go to our printing division; outside our agency we tell
patrons to the CD ROM(s) to a local print shop.
When we do print, we use vegetable not archival inks - so
they fade in about 3-5years.

Subject: Large format color scanner query

From: "Fleet, Christopher" <[log in to unmask]>

Hello,

We are looking to acquire a large-format color scanner, and I wondered
if
list members might be willing to offer any advice? I have reviewed the
maps-l archives for the last few years, and I'm aware this subject has
cropped up before, but with only brief suggestions, and nothing that
recent.

Ideally we would like a sheet-feed scanner, 36 inches wide or greater,
that
can scan up to 400 dpi in color and greyscale, to standard image
formats
including TIFF. We already have a large-format colour printer (HP 500
PS),
so we would not be looking for an integrated scanner/printer option.

Many thanks in advance,

Chris
