Geographic Information Science (GIS) Librarian and
Assistant or Associate Professor of Library Administration
University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign


Position Available:  June 23, 2007, (negotiable).  This is a full-time
faculty position in the Map and Geography Library of the University Library.

Access to geospatial data and fluency in GIS analysis techniques is
vital to many disciplines at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.  Heavy use of GIS, both in instruction and research,
is common in the colleges of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental
Sciences; Engineering; Veterinary Medicine; and Liberal Arts and
Sciences.  The uses of GIS by these groups are often focused on
sustainable natural resource management and health-related projects,
addressing the campus’ strategic priorities of sustainable
environment/energy and health.  The campus GIS community is also playing
a role in the campus’ strategic priority focusing on informatics.

Duties and Responsibilities:  The University of Illinois Library is
seeking an energetic and creative person to serve as the lead in the
Library’s collection and delivery of digital geospatial data and
associated geographic information systems (GIS) services.  The GIS
Librarian will coordinate all aspects of the Library’s digital
geospatial information program at the intersection of user needs,
technology, and data content.  Creating a portal to geospatial data, the
GIS Librarian will move the profession and services offered from
traditional map librarianship towards geoinformatics with an increased
interest in modeling geospatial data and in techniques applied to
geospatial information systems for data management, retrieval, and
analysis.  Provides reference service, research assistance, and
instruction in the selection and possible uses of digital geospatial
data through in-person and remote one-on-one interactions,
workshops/seminars, websites, blogs, and other avenues of widely
distributed communication; works closely with implementers of Learning
Commons and Scholarly Commons to incorporate and support geospatial
analysis tools and data in the suites of commons’ offerings.  Reports to
Map & Geography Librarian.  Works with Associate University Librarian
for Information Technology Planning and Policy, Map and Geography
Librarian and other unit heads, and Library Systems Office to plan and
implement a core geospatial data services center in the Map and
Geography Library and satellite centers in other locations throughout
the Library.  Works with teaching faculty to implement GIS modules in
courses.  Prepares datasets to support course assignments.  Collaborates
with Map and Geography Librarian; Government Documents Librarian; ACES
Librarian; and others in the Library, on Campus, and in the local and
state-wide geospatial community, the GIS Librarian will craft a digital
geospatial data collection development plan and will develop a campus
clearinghouse and archive for digital geospatial data.  Working closely
with Library Systems and Content Access Management Services and campus
IT providers, the GIS Librarian will describe acquired data using
appropriate metadata schema and mount and maintain data on Library or
University servers, providing access to the campus community at large.
Acts as Library’s delegate to the Campus committee of the University
Consortium for Geographic Information Science.  Serves as Library’s
contact person for campus site-license software such as ESRI and ERDAS
products.  Develops and maintains close liaison relationships with local
and state geospatial data producers.  The GIS Librarian will also assist
in setting unit goals and priorities in the Map and Geography Library.

Qualifications: Required:  Master’s degree or equivalent from an
ALA-accredited library school OR PhD in a relevant geospatial
discipline.  Academic or work-related background in one of the social or
spatial sciences with specific experience with GIS software and digital
geospatial data.  Strong interpersonal skills and written and oral
communication skills.  Ability to meet the promotion & tenure
requirements of the University; evidence of a commitment to professional
development, research, and service.  Preferred:  Graduate study in GIS
or a GIS-related field.  Ability to provide effective instruction and
training in the use of geospatial information and GIS tools to faculty,
students and staff.  Experience in GIS project management, data
management, and GIS needs assessment.
Experience with MARC and non-MARC metadata schema.

Salary and Rank:  Salary is competitive and is commensurate with
credentials and experience.  This is an academic professional position.

Terms of Appointment:  12 month appointment; 24 work days vacation per
year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative) plus an
additional 13 days per year (non-cumulative) if necessary; health
insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees
(coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State
Universities Retirement System, which includes several private options,
is required upon appointment (8 % of member’s salary is withheld and is
tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are
covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to
its deduction.
