Subject: conference to honor Von Humboldt in Siberia

Last year I participated in the Intercarto 4 conference in Barnaul,
Siberia. It was an interesting and rewarding experience. This year the
same city will be host to a complementary conference.

I suspect most readers of Maps-l will not get to see this elsewhere, so I
decided to post a copy of the announcement. Feel free to send this elsewhere.

I wrote up my impressions of my travel to Siberia and the Altai Mountains
and posted it on my personal web page -- see Siberia on my page which is
listed in my signature file.

I imagine this will be a very interesting conference and will give you an
opportunity to see a part of the world most of us do not see. I probably
will not go this year because of a time conflict. Jim Carter.

In 1999 we'll mark 170 years since visiting Altai by a naturalist,
geographer, traveller, statesman and public figure Alexander von Humboldt
(1769-1859). In 1829 A. Humboldt made a trip round Eurasia. Barnaul turned

von Humboldt studied magnetism, carried out general geological and
geographical
