Does nobody hold the pre-1947 partition Survey of India quarter-inch to one
mile (1:253 440) series? Sheets 77-D, H, K, L, O, & P [chiefly Tibet], and
78-A, E, J, & M [chiefly Bhutan and Sikkim] provide an L-shaped strip
covering approx. N 27 - 30 degrees/E 88 - 92 degrees.

For the Tibet/China border region, does mot 'China in maps 1890-1960 : a
selective and annotated cartobibliography' by Jack F. Williams (East Lansing
MI : Asian Studies Center, Michigan State University, 1974 ; its East Asia
ser., Occasional Paper No.4) help? Our copy is presently outstored during
building works, but I recall it includes both key diagrams of series (many
of US AMS, for example) and locations of copies (e.g. LoC Geogr. & Map Div.
etc.).

HMMM, We had much the same query here. Is there a contest out there? Is
someone trying to reproduce an early expedition in this area or something?
Is there a movie afoot? Just curious, Alice

We have a patron looking for a detailed old topo map of Tibet.
Specifically, the patron is interested in viewing an area from Llasa to
Sikkim (this area starts north of Bhutan and runs along the Western
border of Bhutan). The patron would like the map to be from the 1930s or
1940s, but will take any detailed topo map covering the area from any
time period. She's also looking for a detailed topo of the Eastern
border b/c Tibet and China. We have searched all of our sets and
possibilities in our library. I did show her a current map at 1:500,000
covering the area, but that wasn't detailed enough for her needs. Does
anyone have something that could help her out and, if so, can I put the
patron in contact w/your library so that she can arrange to get a copy?

Thanks for your help and have a great Thanksgiving-

Ilene
