The University of Georgia Libraries has just received $150,000 to
convert the Map Collection's catalog to an automated format. The money is
coming from GALILEO funds. GALILEO is the University System of Georgia's
statewide library resources and services system. The converted map records
will make the University of Georgia Library's Map Collection holdings
accessable to the entire system.

Now that the the funds are available, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Potter,
the Library Director at the University of Georgia, we now have to get the
records converted. We are at the point of deciding what standards should be
set for the project and who should do the records.

Could those of you out there who have gone through this type of project
give us some advice, hints, possible problems, etc. There are around 375,000
map sheets in the collection, most of which have been cataloged to AACR2, or
the preceeding standards. It is in LC classification. The last 7-8 years
were cataloged to modern standards and are available from OCLC. Probably
60% of the records will be available in OCLC. Any recommendations on who
we should, or could, send the record to for the conversion? What were your
experiences with your project?

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.
