Dear Bruce, list:

We checked our holdings here at East View and there are at least two
sets of materials of possible relevance.

The first is a special 1994 issue of the Yugoslav military mapping
authority's (VGI or Vojnogeografski Institut) occasional periodical
"Zbornik Radova." The issue, published immediately prior to the Dayton
Accords which settled the war in Bosnia, is entirely devoted to the
historical development of Yugoslavia's borders, needless to say from the
Serbian perspective. There are numerous maps (most small-scale and
black & white), some covering precisely your period of interest. In
your area Yale should have a copy of this volume. Otherwise please
contact me offline for access.

The second is a series of 8 historical political-administrative maps
published in 1996-2004 by Geokarta (a Belgrade-based map publisher)
which detail political boundaries, geographic names, and ethnic make-up
of the Balkan region. Titles include (my apologies for a rough
translation from the original Serbian):
1. Hapsburg Monarchy through the 19th Century [Khabzburshka Monarkhija
u XIX veku]
2. Turkish Empire from the 19th to beginning of 20th century [Tursko
tsarstvo u XIX I pochetkom XX veka]
3. Serbia from 1878 to 1913 [Srbija od 1878 do 1913]
These are not historical reproductions but rather modern compiled maps
made by Serbian cartographers using various source materials. Each map
is ca. 34x45 cm and full-color; scales vary and some maps have
additional inset maps. We are not aware of any US libraries that have
these items but we are happy to work with you offline for access.

Best Regards,

Andy

The following information came to me yesterday (Thursday) from John
Steegh (cf my posting to 'MAPS-L' of 2 July):-

"Dear Francis,

Knowing that an atlas about the history of the Balkans, with very
precise maps of (changing) borders is in preparation at the Leiden based
publishing company Brill, I asked the responsable editor if he could
answer the question. He answered me, that it will take some more time
before the atlas will be published, and that the maps will probably not
have Vector information. It will just be paper (not digital) maps,
although they were composed on the computer of the friend of ours that
died a couple of years ago, his atlas almost being finished.

Since the question came to us via you, would you be so kind to send our
answer to the person who asked for it? Once the atlas is on the market,
it might be of interest to this person anyhow.

Greetings,

John Steegh

It occurs to me, following the response I sent a few minutes ago
(Subject: 'Polish maps, esp. Warsaw, 1863-1939'), that the same (Dutch)
source might be able to help regarding Bruce Obenhaus' request on 'Help
finding historical borders of the Balkan countries'. See my former
posting's link, where the author (Harrie Teunissen)'s 'sign-off'
includes the following background info:-

"//Harrie Teunissen and his partner John Steegh are
////map////-collectors from ////Leiden////in ////Holland////. Their
jointly build up collection of some 8000 ////map////s and 1200 atlasses
and travel guides, mostly from 1750 - 1950, focuses on water management,
city development, ethnic relations and military conflicts. They organise
exhibitions based on this collection, like 'The Balkan in ////map////s,
five centuries of struggle about identity'
(////Leiden////////University////Library 2003)."//

The 'book of the exhibition' in Leiden University Library was entitled
'Balkan in kaart : vijf eeuwen strijd om identiteit : catalogus bij een
tentoonstelling in de Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden, 4 september - 16
oktober 2003'. For fuller bibliographic details of this 167-page
illustrated book + CD-ROM, see entry no. 04:56.2(138) in my 'Imago Mundi
Bibliography' for 'Imago Mundi', 2004, 56(2).

I have a researcher looking for a vector layer (or a high resolution

raster) of the historical borders of the Balkan countries before the
First Balkan War (1912).

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Send them to me at [log in to unmask]
