What perfect timing for this topic. I was just looking at scanners last week. I was primarily looking for a document scanner. I seem to have found an ideal one made by HP that was selling for $ 100.00 the only problem that the flatbed wasn't large enough. It contained a way to turn documents into .pdf files and had accessories that would allow to digitize from 35mm film, etc. An 11 x 17 would be ideal for me. The Mircortek scanners mentioned has the right size but not the right software to convert a scan onto .pdf.

I have a number of titles from the USGS and other sources that would benefit from digitization. Some of them are larger than the flatbed size that I have currently. So, if you know of any scanners that have 11 x 17 large flatbeds with the right software, I would be more than glad to hear from you.

A former student from UWM is working as a GIS person and he recently
purchased a scanner/plotter/copier for his office. It's an HP820 and it
sounds pretty neat. Rather than forward the pdf description he sent me -
I found a link here http://www.printergalaxy.com/products/12388.cfm

I'm sure you can google hp820 and find a description at a vendor near
you ...

Here is the opening blurb ...

Combine three frequently used devices in an all-in-one solution. Use the
HP Designjet 820 MFP to copy, scan, and print in color and black &
white. The integrated design saves workspace, and the intuitive
operation means less user training.

It's cool cuz it's all one unit - as opposed to my Library's situation
where we have two rather large, separate pieces of equipment. At my
library, the American Geographical Society Library, UWM, we use a
Colortrak 4280 Color Scanner. It's a 42 inch wide sheet feed scanner and
we've had good success with it. Purchased in 2003 and only down twice
for minor repairs. We have a Hewlett Packard 5500ps plotter. I don't
think the plotter has ever been down for repairs (knock on wood).

Good luck Salim.

Angie

Hi Salim,

We recently had to purchase a new printer/plotter because the old one finally gave out. Our first purchase was an HP 1050C, that lasted 6 years with no major maintenance accept changing print heads. Our new design jet is the 5500 model, 42 inches size for about the same price as the old 1050c. Hopefully this lasts as long. If you are looking at an 11x17 scanner, I might suggest the microtec models, 1000 series or the 9000 series. Great image fidelity and production work.

Hi Everyone-

We are considering purchasing a large format scanner/printer. I looked
through maps-l archives for the
last 3 years and found one helpful post by Joe Aufmuth, its focus was a
reply to scanner specifications that might work for Map Collections, and
he recommended Contex and Colortrac as two major possibilities.

From what I see from other map collections, it sounds like you need to
purchase a scanner and a printer separately. If anybody has purchased a
scanner and printer recently or has done some research on this, I would
appreciate it. We are looking for equipment that will help us both scan
as well as print. Please post to the list.

Thanks very much, Salim
