Subject: Franco-German War, 1870-1871: maps
Sender: Ronald Whistance-Smith <[log in to unmask]>

I've recently obtained two boxed set of maps plus two additional maps
(presumeably from a third box), which I believe to be part of _The
Franco-German War, 1870-1871 / Translated from the German official account
at the topographical and statistical department of the war office by Captain
F.C.H. Clarke, R.P. London : H.M.S.O. 1873-84.
DESCRIPTION: 5 v. : ill., maps (part fold) 24 cm.

The printer is shown on each map as "Geogr. lith. Inst. u Steindr. v. W.
Greve, Kgl. Hoflith. Berlin."

Part II - Vol. 1, and Part II - Vol. 3 are complete according to the list of
"Maps and Sketches" included with each boxed set. The two "orphaned" maps
are [11] "Plan for the siege of Belfort up to the middle of January 1871.
Plan 32", and [12] "Engagement at Villersexel on the 9 January 1871. Plan
33.".

Could someone confirm my presumption that the "orphaned" maps are part of
Part II - Vol. 2 and supply a list of the maps in that volume. I have
located a 1995 reprint of the item but there is no indication that there is
more than one volume and I'm sure the maps would not be part of the reprint.
Could I also be enlightened concerning the five volumes. Is there one
volume of text or two? Are the three volumes of maps I've mentioned
included in the five volume count? Does that mean that all of Part II
consists of boxed set of maps so that I'm missing a fourth box also? As
these maps are to be donated to the University of Alberta, I would like to
have the documentation complete prior to handing them over. Photocopies of
the missing maps would also be appreciated.

Has anyone created an index of the coverage of France provided by this set?
Since the set contains maps at all the standard topographical coverage
scales used in France at this time (1:320,000 / 1:80,000 / 1:40,000 /
and larger scales for cities and towns) hence it seems to me to be a proper
thing to create so long as it hasn't already been done.

Thanks in advance for any help available.
