Aloha Rong,

A request for a Japan topo index appeared a few years back on Maps-L. At
that time, Russell Guy of Omni Resources kindly offered all a scan of an
index sheet (in English). You might contact him for a copy.

Also of possible interest because of the similar geographic coverage of
sheets, the verso of the AMS topo index maps often times provide a list
by sheet numbers and also the romanized sheet name. As an example, for
the Southern Honshu, AMS L775 series, 1:50K index, see the index here
(pdf):

http://ucblibrary3.berkeley.edu:8085/pdf/AMSindexes/ams150436shonshu.pdf

By carefully comparing the AMS index with Mr. Russell's index sheet, one
can determine, for example, that the 1:50K sheet 5049III, titled
Tokushima = NI-53-21-8.

Years ago, before I started working here, someone with Japanese reading
skills went through our collection of pre-1960s Japanese topos (by the
Kokudo Chiriin) and transcribed/cataloged many of the 1:25K,1:50K, and
1:200K sheets. They can be searched on our online catalog by title.

Ross
