  Two good sources for info on pictorial maps including some
city maps of the type which you mention are:
     Holmes, Nigel  Pictorial Maps:History, Design, Ideas, Sources.
        New York: Watson-Guptill Publications, 1991.
     Southworth, Michael and Susan  Maps A Visual Survey and Design
        Guide. Boston:Little Brown, 1982.
 
   If your local library doesn't own they could probably get these
      through an interlibrary loan for you.
   Hope you enjoy them.
