As a former Hagstrom employee during the Langenscheidt era, its sad to
see the various now Kappa consolidated brands being taken away from
their local areas. On the other hand, as a former map editor for a
publisher producing maps for telephone directories around the US it was
interesting, and a little odd to figure out the peculiarities of each
region I was working with. With so much GIS data out there it's easier
to make maps, but harder to sort out what you might know with "ground
truth."

For Hagstrom publication dates, if it's not known already here's a link
to "the code"

One thing I meant to include in my earlier message, and forgot. What
you will often see, at least on newer maps produced under the Kappa
     umbrella, is this:
The imprint, for example UniversalMAP or ADC, with the statement "by
     Kappa Map Group".

They have been handled by LC and others so that the 110 field has the
imprint name, and a 710 is used for Kappa Map Group. The 245 subfield
$c often quotes that statement, ADC by Kappa Map Group, or similar.
  The
260 subfield $b will usually be Kappa, because the legend box or
another
colophon will show Kappa as the copyright holder.

The other challenge along with determining place (sometimes) has
been to
determine publication dates. ADC on their own was often pretty good
about giving dates; UniversalMAP either would not, or would use a code
letter for date. New UniversalMAP imprints have no date that I can
see.
And I have not had enough practice with Mapsco titles to give any
insight there. These cover Texas and the nearby western regions.
Universal is pretty much 'universal' across the US, and the panel style
resembles ADC. But there are Universal maps with their own look as
     well.

I just dove right in with the cataloging, and to my delight found some
of them already done, and with authority records already available.
  The
website company history became my friend, and I bookmarked it in my
Delicious account for ready lookup if I forgot some bit. Pretty
interesting isn't it, that Blue Bell, PA is now a hub for map
publishing. On a similar note, it is interesting to see Santa Barbara,
California, become a hub for map distribution, with at least three
     vendors based there.

There is another company that Russell did not mention, G.M Johnson,
based in British Columbia, but separate from ITMB. They seem to be
expanding their line, and look to have acquired some Universal series,
such as a Michigan regional series, and a Wisconsin series. They may
have acquired some that Rand McNally is no longer publishing. So
another maps hub is in the Vancouver area of BC.

Thanks Ken, this is great news! And what a surprise that Kappa is
out of
     little Blue Bell, Pennsylvania!

I have been an early customer through Russell Guy of several of these
maps for the maps collection here. I began cataloging several of these
purchases. While many required original records, I have had no problem
with authority records. One already exists for Kappa Map Group, and
others such as ADC, Universal Map, Mapsco, American Map, have been in
the authority files for a while.

The biggest challenge has been to determine place of location, as some
of the maps do not give a place. The website that Angie quoted from is
helpful. However, many of the maps that are currently being
distributed
I think were published before some of the acquisitions by Kappa Map
Group were complete. Where Kappa Map Group is named on a map at least
as recent as 2010, Library of Congress has been using Blue Bell, PA as
the place. This is given on the website as the place of the business.
But maps by Universal Maps seem rather peripatetic, ADC has some
that do
not name Alexandria, VA, and Mapsco is sometimes in Addison, TX,
sometimes elsewhere. But the names, including the new one, are already
     authorized as valid corporate names.

Thanks for sharing this news Angie, this is the kind of information
that
us catalogers need to be aware of as we do our work. At some point then
several authority records will need to be changed, possibly merged,
based on what is happening "on the ground". We'll wait to see some
output (maps) with this company name on it first before attempting to
establish a name for Kappa Map Group.

We don't hear a lot about what's going on in the map publishing world.
I'm cataloging a map I recently purchased for my library and see that a
number of publishers have combined under an umbrella company KAPPA Map
     Group, LLC.

     Here is their website:
     https://kappamapgroup.com/t-__companyhistory.aspx
     <https://kappamapgroup.com/t-companyhistory.aspx>

"Kappa Map Group, LLC was formed in early 2011 to provide a single
umbrella over our growing family of map brands – Universal Map,
American
     Map, Mapsco, Hagstrom, and ADC."

Also, Eastview Cartographic purchased Map Link's stock and website.

A few people from Map Link are offering maps from their new company:
